Love. That is the word that comes to mind as I leaf through The Oh She Glows Cookbook by blogger Angela Liddon.
The book itself is clearly a work of love for her readers. From the extremely personal and honest introduction, to the stunning photographs (also by the author), to the creative recipes, so carefully and clearly written, it is clear that Love is the driving force behind this cookbook.
Then there is the love that I feel for the author herself. Although I have never met her, I have been with her from the beginning. When she first started writing her blog, I was there reading. As she became more successful, I was still there reading. It’s a funny relationship between bloggers and their followers – we know so much of the lives they share that we begin to feel like they are family. Angela feels like my little sister and I am so delighted to be holding her first book in my hands.
Healing through diet
The Oh She Glows Cookbook chronicles Angela’s recovery from disordered eating and IBS through the adoption of a plant-based, vegan, whole foods diet. As she began to feed herself real, plant-based foods, and stop dieting and eating processed foods, she began to heal, and glow, from the inside out.
Her journey takes her from just having an interest in healthy food to ethical veganism. The 100+ recipes in the book represent her personal favorites. Although some can be found on her blog, 75 are completely new, never shared before. There are even recipes for the famous Glo Bars that Angela once baked and sold as a side business!
Accessible to everyone
The book begins with an introduction to common ingredients in the whole foods, vegan pantry, with good explanations about their nutritional benefits and how to use them in recipes. The next section highlights some kitchen equipment and cooking tips that will help to get meals prepared with ease and flavor. Ingredients are generally easy to find no matter where you live.
Tried and tasted favourites
The recipes I tried and loved were the Effortless Vegan Overnight Oats, the Loaded Savory Oatmeal and Lentil Bowl (OMG – pure genius!!), and the Protein Power Goddess Bowl, which will be a frequent lunch for me.
Other recipes I can’t wait to try are the Life Affirming Warm Nacho Dip, the Sweet Potato and Black Bean Enchiladas with Avocado-Cilantro Cream Sauce, the Empowered Noodle Bowl with Thai Peanut Sauce, and the Chilled Chocolate-Espresso Torte with Toasted Hazelnut Crust (Full recipe in this link). Wowza! So much vegan yumminess!
I can’t wait for Angela’s next book and to see what else she has in store for us. Until then, hope you enjoy the love!
