10 Loved Vegan Celebrities, of the Feminine Kind

The wait is over! Welcome to the second part of our vegan celebrities series.

Last time, we got to know vegan male celebs a little bit better (don’t deny it – I know you all enjoyed that one).

It’s now time for the ladies. Let me tell you, there are some absolutely gorgeous, inspiring vegan gals out there, so it’s been a tough choice! I just about managed to cram my favorites into this list.

Without further ado, here are my ten personal favorite vegan women.

1.       Jessica Chastain

This redheaded beauty has been on everyone’s mind this past year, hasn’t she? It’s no surprise, then, that in 2012 she was chosen by PETA as the year’s Sexiest Celebrity. Jessica, whose own mom is actually a vegan chef, is herself a longtime vegan and apparently quite the cook.

While her fabulous figure is a nice perk that comes with her vegan lifestyle, Jessica knows there’s more to veganism than that, saying: I don’t want to torture anything. It’s about trying to live a life where I’m not contributing to the cruelty in the world. While I am on this planet, I want everyone I meet to know that I am grateful they are here.” So true!

Emily Deschanel

Some of you might know her just as Zooey’s sister, but Bones fans like me undoubtedly adore Emily regardless of her famous, unfortunately-now-ex-vegan sister. Emily has been a vegetarian since the age of 13, and went vegan a few years later.

Unlike other celebs such as Natalie Portman, Emily even stayed on her vegan diet during her pregnancy. But that’s not all! Other than sticking to a vegan diet, Emily is also a supporter of Farm Sanctuary, PCRM (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine), and HSUS (Humane Society of the United States), trying to raise as much awareness as she can. She even succeeded in reducing co-star David Boreanaz’s meat consumption!

Do you think she can turn this ex-vampire into a vegan? I sure hope so!

Alanis Morissette

Raise your hand if Jagged Little Pill was your life’s soundtrack in the 90’s! I mean, whose soundtrack wasn’t it at some point, right?

So, when did this super-talented lady go vegan? Apparently, after gaining a bunch of weight back in 2008, Alanis decided she’d had enough with processed, unhealthy foods, and chose to go on a vegan diet (with the help of Dr. Joel Fuhrman‘s Eat to Live). After making the decision to go vegan, Alanis lost a whopping 20 lbs and stated that she feels energized, confident and very alive. Sounds like a good reason to go vegan!

Alicia Silverstone

Ok, I’m just going to throw this out there. Clueless is – still to this day – one of my favorite movies ever. It’s such a classic! It is also one of the reasons I was interested in reading Alicia’s vegan cookbook, The Kind Diet, and exploring her vegan website. I’ve never looked back since. Alicia must be a fantastic vegan cook. Whoever tried some of her recipes would probably agree.

Food isn’t the only thing Alicia is an expert on. She also gives vegan dating advice, saying that meeting someone non-vegan is not the end of the world. She explains: “I’d like to think that I would be able to just be looking for a really amazing person, and then trust that that amazing person – once given all the wonderful information that we have to offer, about health and the planet and animals – that that person would be so compassionate and so intelligent and so brilliant that they’d want to jump on board, as much as they possibly could.”

Erykah Badu

This gorgeous singer has some great things to say about veganism: “Vegan food is soul food in its truest form. Soul food means to feed the soul. And to me, your soul is your intent. If your intent is pure, you are pure.”

As has been stated by an Erykah fan, this wonderful lady has been vegan since before it was “cool”. I have to admit, to me, it doesn’t really matter since when she’s been vegan. At least she is vegan now! And her two kids also lead a vegan lifestyle, having grown up in a fully-vegan household. Inspirational!

Betty White

Seriously, is there anyone fiercer and more awesome than this hilarious lady?

The 90-year-old former Golden Girl has been a vegetarian for over three decades. Nowadays, she’s not just a committed vegan, but also a serious animal rights activist, saying she “could never see [herself] eating a best friend”. I must admit that does make quite a bit of sense!

Despite her age, Betty still has a fantastic, extremely active career, looks awesome and is adored by practically everyone. Where does all her energy come from? Could it possibly be due to her vegan diet?

Michelle Pfeiffer

You know how there’s always an argument about who the best Catwoman is? Well. I mean, really, IS there anything to argue? Because clearly it is Michelle Pfeiffer and FOREVER will be. None of that Anne Hathaway nonsense (who actually, is also a vegan).

This stunning 54-year-old says Bill Clinton inspired her to go vegan, proving to her that if a foodie such as him can strive on a vegan diet, so can she. Pfeiffer, who’s been vegan for a relatively short time, says that although the main reason for going vegan is wanting to live a long and healthy life, vanity has a bit to do with it as well. And clearly it’s working, because Michelle looks simply gorgeous!

Venus and Serena Williams

Ok, so I cheated a little and let not one, but two awesome women have this spot. What can I say? It’s too hard of a choice to make.

Back in 2011, tennis star Venus started a raw vegan diet in an attempt to ameliorate a recently-discovered health condition. Serena immediately joined in to show moral support for her big sister.  Two years later, Venus reveals that switching to a vegan diet helped relieve many of the worst symptoms she’s been suffering from since being diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome. No doubt the sisters’ success in sports will provide yet more proof that vegans can be great athletes, too!

9.       Kristen Bell

Admittedly, Kristen has been already briefly mentioned in our previous list of Vegan Male Celebrities, as the fiancé of vegan actor and funnyman Dax Shepard. But since I have quite a soft spot for Miss Bell for her portrayal of the awesome teen-detective on CW’s Veronia Mars, I thought she deserved her very own spot.

A vegetarian since the age of 11, Kristen always thought about going vegan – and she finally did it after watching Forks over Knives. Kristen loves shopping for vegan cookbooks and experimenting with vegan recipes, and even has her own vegetable garden. Kristen says the hardest part about going vegan was cutting out the cheese, but luckily, she found that vegan cheese is just as good. Vegan pizza, anyone?

10.   Olivia Wilde

This beautiful actress says that being vegan is not always easy. And you know what, that might be true. Still, Olivia sticks to it in spite of the challenging moments.

Olivia has been vegan for over four years, and says that one of the most important things is having the right support system. One of the places where she’d found such support was back on the set of the movie Butter, where none other than Alicia Silverstone used to cook delicious vegan meals for her. According to Wilde, those made her feel and look better than she’d ever felt! That, my friends, is what a vegan diet does.

Natalia Irmin

Content Manager, Writer & Reviewer

Hi! My name is Natalia. I’m currently residing in Israel and studying towards a BA in Psychology and Environmental Studies. I became vegan after reading Jonathan Safran Foer’s book, Eating Animals. I found that educating myself via books and movies, and surrounding myself with people who support the vegan lifestyle made a big difference in my life. Throughout this process I learnt so many new things, and have come to consider what I can do for the planet and how I can be more compassionate to its creatures.
