According to the National Coffee Association, 61% of Americans drank more coffee than soft drinks in 2014! That is a whole lot of caffeine. What this means is that even if you aren’t drinking coffee, this very second someone really close to you probably is. But let’s be honest, if you want a really great cup of vegan coffee, the regular ol’ soy or almond milk might not always hit the spot.
Currently there aren’t too many specialty vegan coffee creamers available that are suitable for people with soy sensitivities, and aren’t either made with artificial ingredients or loaded with sugar. Enter nutpods!
From Kickstarter campaign to an Amazon launch
Beginning as a Kickstarter campaign in October 2013, nutpods’ goal was to raise $30k to convert owner Madeline’s homemade recipe into a suitable and marketable commercial formula. Thanks to the generosity of over 500 backers, nutpods was successfully funded and have just launched their product on Amazon!
Besides the great story about how they started, nutpods is also different from other coffee creamers. Their creamer is vegan certified, and free from various nasties like GMO, mono/di-glycerides, artificial flavors, artificial colors, and hydrogenated/partially hydrogenated oils. What it has instead are heart-healthy almonds and MCT-rich coconuts.
So now that you know how nutpods got started and what they are made of, here comes the important part: the taste test!
Natural flavors: the taste test
There are two flavors of nutpods: Original (unsweetened), and the perennial favorite, French Vanilla. As part of the taste test of both flavors, I enlisted the help of some of my non-vegan and avid coffee-drinking colleagues to offer their impartial opinion. The first thing I noticed was how easily nutpods mixed in with our coffee. The taste complemented the creamy texture, and didn’t overpower or water down the flavor of the coffee. Most importantly it wasn’t overly sugary. I like drinking coffee, not a liquid dessert. If you do want something sweeter, adding your favorite sweetener is an easy fix.
My colleagues loved nutpod creamers! One colleague even stated that what they liked was that “there isn’t as much of the fattiness you get from heavy whipping cream or whole milk where it almost starts to taste like a dessert”. Score!
Those of you who enjoy nutty and special flavors will be happy to hear that Madeline and the nutpods team are currently working on two additional flavors: the ever so lovely hazelnut, and chai.
Ambitions and plans for the future of nutpods
Speaking with nutpods’ awesome founder and owner, Madeline, I asked about her goals and future plans: “Our goal is to keep providing the creamiest, richest alternative to half and half for dairy-free consumers. We are overjoyed to see so many postings, Instagrams and reviews that mention the various ways our creamers are used in dairy-free quiches, ice-cream, pasta sauces and other sweet or savory dishes. Our unsweetened Original is perfect for a variety of uses.
It was also important for us to reach all of our Kickstarter backers and consumers, so we launched on Amazon four weeks ago and have been the #1 New Release on Amazon since we debuted! With free shipping to Prime members or combined purchases totaling over $35, we’re very pleased to partner with Amazon to help us service all of our nation-wide customers”.
And if you are wondering if we are going to see single sized pods that you can carry around with you in your bag, you won’t be disappointed: “The pods are still very much under development. We hope to release them as soon as we can qualify the demand for the single-serve format”, added Madeline.
